The Chemistry of Peptic Ulcers
Peptic ulcers are painful sores found in the stomach, intestine, duodenum, and/or the intestines caused by a bacteria called, Helicobacter Pylori. I chose peptic ulcers as my topic because I recently found out that I have these ulcers and I wanted to learn more about them. Peptic ulcers affected my life such as my eating habits. I can’t eat certain foods or else the acid in my stomach starts to eat the lining of my stomach. Helicobacter Pylori played a major role as well. Starting with this bacteria, it spread to my stomach lining and small intestines. I am only allowed a certain amount of food per day to make sure I don’t over eat or eat too little because the stomach acid will rise and eat away at the lining in my stomach.

The Composition of a peptic ulcer includes Helicobacter Pylori, stomach acid, and ibuprofen or advil. H. Pylori is a bacteria that contaminates food or water. Stomach acid (HCL, KCl, NaCl) will rise when there is too much or not enough food in the stomach. Ibuprofen or Advil (C13H18O2) can cause the stomach acid to rise and damage the stomach lining creating an ulcer.

Helicobacter Pylori is a bacteria found in uncooked food or unpurified water. H. Pylori affects as many as two-thirds of the world, most people don’t know they have this bacteria because the symptoms go unnoticed. The bacteria travels to the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, or intestine which will eventually create and ulcer.
Stomach acid will damage the stomach lining when too much or not enough food in consumed which will make the stomach acid rise. When too much food is consumed, the stomach acid will build up and damage the lining of the stomach wall. When not enough food is consumed, the stomach acid has nothing to break down so it will damage the stomach lining causing an ulcer or hole in the stomach.
Helicobacter Pylori and stomach acid is naturally occurring, depending on what a person may consume. Helicobacter Pylori is a bacteria found in contaminated food and water; when consumed, the bacteria travels to one or multiple parts of the body. If it travels to the stomach, it will make the stomach acid rise and damage the lining of the stomach acid. Stomach acid (HCL, KCl, and NaCl) is produced inside of the stomach. When too much or not enough food is in the stomach, the acid level will rise and ruin the stomach lining causing peptic ulcers. In some cases, reflux will occur and the stomach acid will start to eat away at the esophagus and possibly cause an ulcer in there because a hole will be made. The final product, a peptic ulcer, can possibly be man made, depending on the view a person might make. A person can cause themselves to eat too much or not enough food which will make the stomach acid rise; causing damage and creating and ulcer.
